New Orleans' New Connection
According to Washington Post writer Jonathan Krim, Hurricane-ravaged New Orleans will deploy the nation's first municipally owned wireless Internet system that will be free for all users, part of an effort to jump-start recovery by making living and doing business in the city as attractive as possible. While similar projects are being considered in both New York City and San Francisco, New Orleans will become the first U.S. city to provide free wireless Internet service.# - Sebastien Marion - Wireless - 12/1/05; 9:00:54 AM -

Homework in the Park?
As suggested in our August 23rd entry Wi-Fi for the Masses, The New York Daily News is reporting that a Wi-Fi umbrella is indeed in the works. The umbrella is being prepared to cover 10 city parks and is scheduled to be released this mid-October. Let's hope that this is true and that one day we will be able to access information freely from anywhere!

Wi-Fi for the Masses?
Internet news continues to circulate concerning Google's recent acquisitions, which include both broadband and telecommunication companies, and its possible desire to establish a massive wireless network in the United States.
Will this network ever come to exist, and, if so, how would it change the ways in which we seek out and distribute information? Some municipalities, like San Francisco, are already in the process of organizing local Wi-Fi projects. In New York City, for example, users can already access many free networks, such as in Bryant Park, and groups like NYC Wireless are making steady progress.
For a simple overview of some of these efforts, read Technology Review's "Wi-Fi for the Masses." # - Sebastien Marion - Wireless - 8/23/05; 10:51:37 PM -

Almost all NYIT libraries have made the jump to wireless access. Currently, wireless access is available at the following locations: the Education Hall Library, the Manhattan Library (1st floor only), NYCOM Medical Library, and the Wisser Memorial Library.
