Fight Information Overload!

Drowning in a sea of information?  Usability guru Jakob Nielsen Overload: has a few good points on dealing with the flood.   Also, for both students and teaching faculty, Nielsen's most recent Alertbox newsletter isolates a few concepts that will benefit students forever, regardless of the changing technical landscape.

Read:

Books by Jakob Nielsen available in the NYIT Libraries include:

  • Nielsen1: Prioritizing Web Usability
    Call No. TK5105.888 .N553 2006
Locations: Manhattan Library, and Wisser Library

  • Designing Web Usability

Facebook - The Library Needs Friends

As you can see below, the library now has a Facebook profile, and has created 3 new and exciting Facebook Groups.  The three groups are:

  • Hot Links - Websites Worth Sharing.  This is a place to find and share great sites.  Funny site, educational site, can't do without site?  Pass it on!  Take a bow!

  • What Are You Reading (NYIT Book Club).  This is a place to exchange great book titles.  Want a book that will make you laugh out loud on the subway (people are going to think you're a little odd)?  Try John Kennedy Toole's "A Confederacy of Dunces."  Looking for a fictional commentary on the American experience in Vietnam?  Read Kent Anderson's Night Dogs.  Read a book that changed the way you live, or work?  Let everyone know about it!

  • NYIT Library Group.  Finally, the NYIT Library Group is a place where you can sound off on the NYIT Libraries.  If you want to comment on what's great (or not-so-great) about the libraries, now is your big chance!

The Kite Runner eBook

"I became what I am today at the age of twelve, on a frigid overcast day in the winter of 1975.  He asked me to come see him.  Standing in the kitchen with the receiver to my ear, I knew it wasn’t just Rahim Khan on the line.  But despite sharing ethnic heritage and family blood, Sanaubar joined the neighborhood kids in taunting Ali.  Ali never retaliated against any of his tormentors, I suppose partly because he could never catch them with that twisted leg dragging behind him.  A few grunts, a couple of pushes, and out came Hassan."

And so begins author Khaled Hosseini's novel Kite Runner Now available to the NYIT community in downloadable eBook format, Kite Runner – along with NYIT Library’s other 10,000 electronic books – can be read here.

Podcast:

Recently Khaled Hosseini participated in the Library of Congress National Book Festival.  Listen-in as Mr. Hosseini talks about Afghanistan, the inspiration behind “The Kite Runner” and his experience as an immigrant in the United States.

Ask a Librarian Using E-mail

Have a question that you need answered?  There are a multitude of question and answer services currently on the web.  Yedda is a knowledge sharing web site that lets you ask and answer questions of people with similar interests.  Yahoo has experienced great success with another web based knowledge exchange, Yahoo! Answers.  Finally, libraries have been offering services like these to customers for as long as many can remember.  The New York Public Library offers telephone, e-mail and chat services.  Here at NYIT, the library system provides Ask-a-Librarian.  How does Ask-a-Librarian work, you ask?  Simply, type a question, include your NYIT e-mail address, and wait for a response.

Faculty Focus

Welcome to all new and returning faculty and staff members. The NYIT librarians encourage all faculty and staff to become familiar with our services, resources and procedures.  A faculty that is well-informed about NYIT Library resources can better provide their students with successful academic experiences, and more productively facilitate their own research.

For more information, please view the Guide to Library Services for NYIT Faculty and Staff.

Blog Upgrades

We have made a number of improvements to the NYIT Library Blog.  First, thanks to Yong Ra of NYIT's Technology Based Learning Systems, we have both a new web address, and new RSS feed.  Our new home on the Web is http://webblog.nyit.edu/library.  Our new RSS news feed is http://webblog.nyit.edu/library/xml/rss.xml.  This news feed can easily be placed in any news aggregator.  You might begin by reading former blog posts “How to Track Information by Using RSS” and “What’s All this Fuss I hear About RSS?”

Alas, we have finally organized our complete archive, and offer the following sections.  These sections provide access to all of our previous postings by topic, and each section may be monitored through its own RSS feed.  The sections and news feed are:
