Fight Information Overload!
Drowning in a sea of information? Usability guru Jakob Nielsen has a few good points on dealing with the flood. Also, for both students and teaching faculty, Nielsen's most recent Alertbox newsletter isolates a few concepts that will benefit students forever, regardless of the changing technical landscape.
Read:
Books by Jakob Nielsen available in the NYIT Libraries include:
Prioritizing Web Usability Call No. TK5105.888 .N553 2006 Locations: Manhattan Library, and Wisser Library
- Designing Web Usability
Call No. TK5105.888 .N55 2000 Locations: Education Hall Library, and Manhattan Library
Finally, you can visit Jakob's Website here. The site includes Alertbox, Nielsen's bi-monthly column on Web usability. # - Sebastien Marion - News - 3/7/07; 3:42:58 PM -
Facebook - The Library Needs Friends
As you can see below, the library now has a Facebook profile, and has created 3 new and exciting Facebook Groups. The three groups are:
- Hot Links - Websites Worth Sharing. This is a place to find and share great sites. Funny site, educational site, can't do without site? Pass it on! Take a bow!
- What Are You Reading (NYIT Book Club). This is a place to exchange great book titles. Want a book that will make you laugh out loud on the subway (people are going to think you're a little odd)? Try John Kennedy Toole's "A Confederacy of Dunces." Looking for a fictional commentary on the American experience in Vietnam? Read Kent Anderson's Night Dogs. Read a book that changed the way you live, or work? Let everyone know about it!
- NYIT Library Group. Finally, the NYIT Library Group is a place where you can sound off on the NYIT Libraries. If you want to comment on what's great (or not-so-great) about the libraries, now is your big chance!

The Kite Runner eBook
"I became what I am today at the age of twelve, on a frigid overcast day in the winter of 1975. He asked me to come see him. Standing in the kitchen with the receiver to my ear, I knew it wasn’t just Rahim Khan on the line. But despite sharing ethnic heritage and family blood, Sanaubar joined the neighborhood kids in taunting Ali. Ali never retaliated against any of his tormentors, I suppose partly because he could never catch them with that twisted leg dragging behind him. A few grunts, a couple of pushes, and out came Hassan."
And so begins author Khaled Hosseini's novel Kite Runner. Now available to the NYIT community in downloadable eBook format, Kite Runner – along with NYIT Library’s other 10,000 electronic books – can be read here.
Podcast:
Recently Khaled Hosseini participated in the Library of Congress National Book Festival. Listen-in as Mr. Hosseini talks about Afghanistan, the inspiration behind “The Kite Runner” and his experience as an immigrant in the United States.
