Copyright vs. Fair Use
Whether you are uploading a mashup to YouTube, working on your visual portfolio, or producing your latest student film, it's often common to incorporate other peoples work and ideas into your own. However, when doing so, you must first determine whether or not their work is protected by copyright or is fair to use.
Not sure which rules apply? Download and read the free and fun comic book Tales from the Public Domain: Bound by Law, and follow its heroine Akiko as she films her documentary, and "navigates the twists and turns of intellectual property and fair use."
Created by Duke University's Center for the Study of the Public Domain, Bound by Law considers the history of copyright, as well as what it means to have material that is free to use without permission and/or payment.
