ARTstor Collection News

ARTstor Collection Summary

In the past twelve months ARTstor has continued to expand the breadth and depth of its collections. This year 200,000 images were added to the Digital Library, bringing the total to approximately 700,000 images. This year 29 new collections were released and new content was added to 11 existing collections.  And lastly, negotiated agreements with 11 new collection contributors were made.

ARTstor Collection Update


Installation Photos from the New Museum of Contemporary Art Collection Now in ARTstor

ARTstor is pleased to announce the release of over 6,000 images into the New Museum of Contemporary Art Collection. The images document installations from the Museum since its opening in 1977. This release coincides with the opening of the Museum's new facility in New York and greatly increases the Digital Library’s representation of contemporary art.

New Addition to the ARTstor Digital Library: the Modern Latin American Art Collection

ARTstor and the Art and Art History Department at the University of Texas, Austin have collaborated on a project to digitize and distribute the teaching slides from Professor Jacqueline Barnitz’s collection. This release contains over 3,800 images that provide teachers, students and scholars with a core teaching collection in the area of modern Latin American art.

More Manuscripts and Early Printed Books Images from the Bodleian Library, Oxford University

ARTstor is pleased to announce the addition of over 6,400 high quality images of manuscripts and early printed books from the Bodleian Library at Oxford University. This brings the collection contents to over 10,800 images. The entire collection will reach approximately 25,000 with subsequent releases through 2008.

Images from the Kress Collection

The Samuel H. Kress Foundation and ARTstor are happy to announce the release of approximately 640 images of art works formerly belonging to the Kress Collection. Many of the greatest Italian artists appear in the Kress Collection, as do numerous significant works by less familiar masters.

Images from the Carnegie Institution of Washington Mayan Excavations (Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University)

ARTstor, in collaboration with the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University, is happy to announce the initial release of over 22,000 images of Mayan excavations. The images come from the renowned photographic archives of the Carnegie Institution of Washington (CIW), which documents archaeological excavations throughout Central America.

Now Available in ARTstor: the Natural History Drawings of the Endeavour Voyage

In collaboration with the Natural History Museum in London, ARTstor has digitized and now released a collection of over 950 watercolors, drawings, and related paintings of botany and zoological subjects documented on Captain James Cook's voyage aboard the HMS Endeavour between 1768 and 1771.

Additional Images from the Mellon International Dunhuang Archives

ARTstor is pleased to announce a sizable addition to The Mellon International Dunhuang Archive. Nearly 40,000 images from the British Library manuscripts and over 28,000 images from the Bibliotheque national de France manuscripts will join the previously released images of the Buddhist cave shrines in Dunhuang, China.

ARTstor Update
 
ARTstor is pleased to announce the first release of images to the Mark Rothko Collection in the ARTstor Digital Library. This release includes 43 paintings scanned from eight-by-ten color transparencies not previously in public collections. Learn more

 

Ghiberti Collection Completed

Just released the final 30 images of the Ghiberti collection, depicting the cleaned Noah panel. Along with the previously added images of the partially cleaned panel, these images further underscore the importance of the recent restoration campaign and its photographic documentation by ARTstor. New Additions

Approximately 2,300 additional images to the Islamic Art and Architecture Collection. This latest release focuses on Ottoman architecture in Turkey and brings the total number of images in this collection to over 14,800. Learn more

 

More European art and architecture from Scala Archives and Art Resource bringing the total number of Scala images now available to ARTstor users to approximately 10,500. Learn more

New Collection Agreements    

 

ARTstor is pleased to announce the digitization of 70,000 images from the Ezra Stoller Archive. Ezra Stoller is widely recognized as the leading American architectural photographer of the 20th century. Learn more

 

Through a partnership with the Library of Congress, ARTstor will distribute approximately 200,000 images from the Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) and Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) image collections. Coverage spans across the United States and its territories, representing various periods and styles from the 17th through the 20th century. Learn more

 

ARTstor and the New Museum of Contemporary Art are collaborating to digitize and distribute approximately 7,000 images from the New Museum's photo archive. This collaboration will significantly increase the representation of contemporary art in the Digital Library. Learn more

 

ARTstor and the Library of Congress will collaborate to distribute images from the Carnegie Survey of the Architecture of the South collection, a systematic record of early buildings and gardens in the American South. The Library of Congress will be digitizing the Carnegie Survey negatives for eventual distribution through the Digital Library. Learn more

 

Through a partnership with ARTstor, the Visual Resources Center at Bryn Mawr College will be contributing a collection of site plans for key ancient and medieval architectural monuments and archaeological sites. There are approximately 8,000 black and white slides depicting archaeological and building site plans, particularly relating to the classical and ancient Near East, as well as medieval Europe. ARTstor and Douglas Massey will collaborate to bring approximately 130 images of Mexican retablos to the Digital Library. Dating from 1912 to 1996, these small, colorful oil paintings represent modern expressions of a traditional Mexican art form. Learn more

ARTstor Update

ARTstor announces important changes to the ARTstor Digital Library and the ARTstor website.

The redesigned public website represents the first of two important phases in ARTstor’s transition to a new interface and software platform. While release of the ARTstor website and Digital Library will be incremental over the coming months, they are being developed as a unified platform that will provide visual continuity between the informational website and the content-rich Digital Library. When fully released, users will enter ARTstor and remain in a seamless web environment.  Click here to learn more.

ARTstor is used by educators, scholars and students in a wide variety of disciplines. The library includes more than 500,000 high quality digital images from some of the finest collections world wide.

A series of handouts that highlight the relevance and value of the image collections have been created for your use. Included in these handouts are collection overviews and helpful tips for searching and category browsing.

Grove Art Online

This month's update to Grove Art Online includes over 100 new and updated articles and over 420 new images, as well as expanded links according to subject area.  Now available are full color sample illustrations by the quintessential Renaissance master Giotto, plans for the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul and interior shots of Hagia Sophia, a wide array of African masks, sculptures, and figurines, and much more!

New Collections Added to Grove Art Online

Grove Art Online provides web access for NYIT students and faculty to the entire text of The Dictionary of Art, ed. Jane Turner (1996, 34 vols.) and The Oxford Companion to Western Art, ed. Hugh Brigstocke (2001).

Grove Art Online is also delighted to announce that we have just published nearly 400 new images of major works of art from the British Museum collection. We are pleased to partner with this premier institution offering unparalleled treasures ranging from African masks to European painting. Thumbnail images within articles expand and captions enable readers to link directly to more information on the British Museum COMPASS website. We thank the British Museum for collaborating with us to further our shared mission of disseminating educational information on world art and cultures online.

We are delighted to announce that the latest update to NYIT's subscription database Grove Art Online is now available.

NEW THEMATIC ESSAY...
A major new thematic essay, Spirituality and Art, traces the spiritual role of art throughout the world, exploring subjects as various as the pyramids, still-life painting and contemporary installation art.  It also highlights a wealth of Grove Art Online content beyond artists' biographies such as
essays Religion and art, Shamanism, the Sublime, Jewish art, Native North American art and more.


UPDATED ARTICLES...
Over 80 articles have been updated with new bibliography, death dates and textual revisions to reflect new scholarship in the field of art history. These include articles on Patrick Caulfield, Pieter Claesz, Al Held, Ed Paschke and Baltazard Solvyns.


OVER 400 NEW IMAGES...
Grove Art Online also continues to expand its image offerings and we have added over 400 new images to the text of major articles such as Ancient Near East, Early Christian and Byzantine, Etruscan, Helladic, Mesopotamia and Ancient Rome. We now display over 2,500 key images in art history in the text of frequently consulted articles.  A selection of illustrated articles is available.

Isometric Skyscrapers

Have a few free hours to spend surfing the Internet?  The Skyscraper Page includes isometric drawings of more than 22,000 buildings, more than 600 of which are in New York City.  Also included are the world's 10 tallest buildings, as well as a number of buildings currently under construction.

ARTstor Announces the Release of New Images, Formerly a Part of the AMICO Collection

ARTstor, the NYIT Library subscription database, is pleased to announce the release into the ARTstor Digital Library of over 25,000 images.  The ARTstor Charter Collection currently contains approximately 300,000 images; by 2006 it is expected to contain 500,000.  As of today, users will be able to view digital renditions of images provided by the following museums:

To locate these images, which have been integrated into the Image Gallery and its browsing taxonomy, you can use “AMICO” as a keyword when searching.  For best results, combine “AMICO” with additional search criteria, such as repository or creator name.  For more information about NYIT Library's subscription to ArtStor, please see our website.

New Art Databases: Art Full Text & Art Index Retrospective

The library is pleased to provide the NYIT community with two new electronic databases: Art Full Text and Art Index Retrospective.


Art Full Text (Indexing 1984+, Abstracting 1994+, Select Full Text 1997+)

Art Full Text includes full text plus abstracts and indexing of an international array of peer-selected publications—now with expanded coverage of Latin American, Canadian, Asian and other non-Western art, new artists, and contemporary art.

 

Art Index Retrospective (Indexing 1929-1984)

Art Index Retrospective provides an invaluable, in-depth record of contemporary art history, allowing users to search 55 years of art journalism at a keystroke. Users can research leading English-language sources, plus others published in French, Italian, German, Spanish, and Dutch. Besides periodicals, users have access to data from important yearbooks and select museum bulletins.

The Louvre's New Masterpiece

The Louvre, once the palace of France's kings and today the largest museum in the world, has unveiled a re-tooled, state-of-the-art website costing more than seven million euros (approximately 8.56 million dollars).  The Louvre houses more than 34,000 art works over 60,000 square meters and attracts some six million visitors annually.  You can read more about this project and access the museum here.

ARTstor is a new digital library of art images, associated information, and software tools designed to enhance teaching, learning and scholarship. ARTstor contains approximately 300,000 images of art, architecture and archeology from a wide range of cultures and time periods, with initial strengths in European, American and Asian cultures.

MADCAD: Building Codes Online

MAD CAD is an online reference database, containing building codes, knowledge-based design solutions and guidelines to meet these codes. MADCAD will provide you access to cross-referenced collections of building, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, fire, and maintenance codes from BOCA, SBCCI, ICBO, ICC, and NFPA. MAD CAD gives access to comprehensive state and local codes to meet architectural, engineering and educational solutions. You can search for codes from the main page, or by using the search function.

RIBA Architectural Publications Index

You are now able to search RIBA’s Architectural Publications Index (API), an international coverage of some 300 core architecture journals from 1972 to present. The API is only one part of the RIBA British Architectural Library Online Catalogue. Before searching you must specify the ARTICLES section of the RIBA Online Catalogue. From the RIBA Online Catalogue, scroll down to Search Limits at the bottom of the screen, left-hand side.
