Why Interdisciplinary Studies?
The average American will work 10 to 12 different jobs in the course of his/her lifetime and have 3 to 5 different careers. The IDSP major, combining three different concentrations, is ideally suited to these facts of life. You can combine areas to create a strong set of skills. You can also create a major that is more like the real world of work (where people have to combine a variety of tasks and skills).
For many students, IDSP is a relatively quick way to complete a college degree they have started at NYIT or at another school. We are able to combine credits from previous college work into strong concentrations that will help you complete your degree in a reasonable time frame.
Some recent graduates had this to say:
Leslie Gee, Class of 2006 and winner of the 2006 Interdisciplinary Studies Award for outstanding academic performance in the online program:
"As a returning 'older' student, the circumstances in my life had changed drastically from the time when I first began my educational pursuits. The ability to transfer credits from different disciplines into the IDSP program enabled me to proceed ahead with my goal of obtaining my Bachelor's Degree. Multiple concentrations kept the program interesting as well as allowing me to pursue my different interests and needs. Often, focusing on one field or major limits one's career choices when the time comes to obtaining a job. I completed my degree online and the combination of the IDSP curriculum and online flexibility meant that I could complete the degree requirements while working full time. All in all, the IDSP program in my opinion is a successful approach to education for the older student, the returning student, and those who are just entering college and may not be sure of what their future path may be. I would recommend the IDSP program without hesitation."
Vincent Satriano: "Currently, I work as an online services manager for an online marketing company. The IDSP major allowed me to study multiple courses across the board such as business law, computer networking, public relations, marketing, advertising, java programming, and etc., which has allowed me to be more productive and have the ability to advance more quickly in my career. The reason for this is that I can deal with multiple departments with more ease from account management, web production, programming, IT, business development, and etc. IDSP also allows me to better explain technology problems with sales reps, which may not be that technologically knowledgeable."
Jose Sierra: "My degree in interdisciplinary studies has worked very well both personally and professionally. My concentrations were computer science, behavioral science, and math. I find that many IT professionals who have a computer science degree lack the intrapersonal skills that I picked up in my behavioral science concentration. I find that I have a solid foundation in three very important areas. I am currently working on an MBA at LIU CW Post where I have a 3.6 GPA and am scheduled to graduate in May 2006."
